The Phony Breast Cancer Industry Goes FLAT

breast cancer 263x164 The Phony Breast Cancer Industry Goes FLAT Susan G Komen for the Cure, part of the Komen Foundation, announced recently that it would be cutting several cities from its three-day fundraising road races that have garnered the organization millions of dollars over the years for misdirected cancer research and education. The organization says their decision to cut back is due to lower-than-sustainable participation numbers?evidence the people of the U.S. are getting it right when it comes to this organization that is really more about money than saving lives.

The agency organizes three-day fundraising races in cities throughout the country, all under the guise of breast cancer awareness. And while many breast cancer survivors find support and solace in these events?the organization uses these sort of ?feel good? walks to fund nonsensical research and education.

For instance, in 2009, Susan G. Komen for the Cure spent $141 million on breast cancer education, but none of this education covered legitimate nutrition issues that have a significant impact on breast cancer risk, development, and treatment. The organization?and all of their money and power?dedicates nothing to teaching women about the dangers of refined fructose, for instance, which feeds cancer growth like water to Gremlins. Nor do they invest any money into research on the beneficial effects of Vitamin D on cancer. Rather, they spend millions on advocating radiation-emitting mammograms, whose reliability and place in cancer detection are questionable at best.

While the mainstream media would have you think Susan G. Komen?s lack of participation can all be credited to the backlash last year when the agency decided to sever ties with Planned Parenthood, it must go much deeper than that. The agency itself admits to a drop in participation of 37% over the past four years. And although the drop was slightly more significant last year, when they sought to cut funding for the women?s clinic that provides abortions (among many other things), their participation levels had been dropping before.

The fact is, Americans are waking up to the organization?s misdirected millions. A t-shirt and the camaraderie of walking with other survivors may be nice, but it?s nothing when compared with investing your money and time on true prevention strategies.

?There are some folks who will never be back, and we know that,? said Komen spokeswoman Andrea Rader about their declining participation numbers. ?And we hope that they will support breast cancer charities because the work?s important.?

She?s right?breast cancer research is important. But even more important than funneling millions into mammograms and the makers of traditional cancer treatments is educating women on how to prevent cancer naturally. Here?s hoping people not only support breast cancer research, but the right breast cancer research.

Communications Professor Deandre Poole's status at FAU is still ...

After being placed on administrative leave as a result of a controversial classroom exercise, Communications Professor Deandre Poole is awaiting a recommendation by the Provost to renew his contract. Photo courtesy of FAU.

What started out as a routine exercise gave Communications Professor Deandre Poole an uncertain future.

It?s been four months since the ?Jesus Stomping? exercise and Poole?s career status is still unknown. Poole is awaiting a recommendation by the provost that will enable him to teach at the university once again.

The classroom exercise that involved writing ?Jesus? on a ?piece of paper and stepping on it received nationwide coverage when a Mormon FAU student in Poole?s class, Ryan Rotela, refused to participate.

The current progress being made toward that decision is unclear.

?No decisions have been made and there are no deadlines in the process,? Scott Silversten, assistant vice president of university communications, said through email.

The UP previously reported that Rotela allegedly didn?t participate in the exercise along with other students, but he later harassed Poole saying he ?wanted to hit him? and was reprimanded.

Davie Student Affairs Administrator Rozalia Williams charged Rotela with violating Regulation 4.007 of the Student Code of Conduct ?? specifically Section 5 Letter N, which cites forms of abuse, threats, or intimidation as violating the code.

Although FAU originally backed Poole, the university put him on paid leave for safety reasons, ?banned the exercise, and replaced Williams.

The UP asked about Williams? current job status, but according to Silversten, ?the University does not comment on individual personnel situations.?

FAU?s chapter of the United Faculty of Florida ?? a group that represents Florida?s higher education faculty ?? expressed their discontent toward the university for making the decision to ban the exercise without their input. The faculty union and other protesters publicly stood by Poole and the right to academic freedom after previous protesters opposed Poole.

Months later, the faculty continue to stand by Poole.

?All faculty [support Poole] because it could be them,? Chris Robe, the president of FAU?s faculty union, said when asked if Poole has the union?s support.

Poole also has the support of 20 of the 23 students that were present in the class when the exercise took place. These 20 students all signed a letter of support for Poole stating that he is a man of ?high moral values? and that the exercise followed suit with university classes whose goals are to teach students ?how to think, not what to think.?

?I have a passion for cultures and journalism and I know he did too,? Alejandra Parada, one of the students that signed the letter and a senior intercultural communications major who took three of his classes, said. ?It was exciting to work with him for three classes.?

Olivia Guerrero, another student who signed the letter, commented on a web article by The Conservative Tree House that was critical of Poole and the exercise.

?I am actually a student in the class and was present during the lesson. The assignment was not meant to bash religion in anyway as Dr. Poole is himself a Christian,? she said. ?The intended lesson of the assignment was to signify the importance of symbols and how they are viewed across cultures (some would not consider stepping on a name to be offensive).?

Instead of a typical flashy presentation at the?Electronic?Entertainment?Expo, the Japanese gaming giant opted to showcase several games for its Wii U system during a brief Tuesday presentation at its booth on the show floor of the gaming industry's annual trade show.

"Today is different," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told those gathered inside the behemoth white structure. "It's the reason you're gathered here inside of our booth ? standing instead of sitting ? because it was our decision to minimize the time from when we said 'good morning' and you getting to play the game."

Nintendo showed off the cartoony strategy game "Pikmin 3," anti-gravity racer "Mario Kart 8," 2-D platformer "Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze," 3-D platformer "Super Mario 3D World," slick action sequel "Bayonetta 2" and a speedier rendition of "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" for the Wii U. For gamers who couldn't make it to E3, the titles will be on display at more than 100 Best Buy Co. stores in North America this week.

The company also flaunted ? but didn't allow attendees to play ? a new installment in the fighting series "Super Smash Bros." The new edition will feature such characters as Mario, Mega Man and the female yoga trainer from Wii Fit.

The company has struggled since November with the launch of the Wii U, which features an innovative tablet-like controller yet graphics on par with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo Co. said it sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below the company's expectations.

"We feel very good about this E3, and that's because consumers buy hardware to play games, and we're got a fantastic lineup of games that we're showcasing," Fils-Aime said after the event.

During showy Monday presentations, competitors Microsoft and Sony hyped their respective next-generation consoles. Microsoft Corp. touted new games for the Xbox One, which it said will cost $499, while Sony Corp. unveiled its boxy $399 console, the PlayStation 4. Both consoles feature richer graphics and deeper social networking capabilities.

"Our competition is going to do what best serves their needs," said Fils-Aime. "We're a different type of company, utilizing our first-party titles to drive our install base. We've done that very effectively for over 30 years. We're a video game company. We make great games. That's what we focus on."

Here's the First 5.0 GHz CPU You Can Actually Buy

AMD just one-upped its own series of eight-core FX processors, and the golden child of this newest lineup is unquestionably the FX-9590, which they claim to be the world's "first-ever 5 GHz processor." While technically that record was already beat?and by AMD themselves, no less?it is, in fact, the first commercially available 5GHz CPU processor.

The other CPUs run a bit slower at 4.7 GHz for the FX-9370 and 4.2 GHz for the FX-8350, but then again, these also stay within the 5 GHz max. Because remember: if you damage your new speed demon FX-9590 chip, AMD has a no replacement policy. No word yet on pricing, but supposedly, Maingear will be using the record-beater in an upcoming gaming system later this summer. [Engadget]

Bombs and battles hit northern Iraq, at least 40 dead

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Car bombs, suicide attacks and gun battles in cities across northern Iraq killed nearly 40 people on Monday in worsening unrest that has heightened fears of a return to sectarian civil war.

No group claimed responsibility for the series of attacks, but officials blame most of the violence that has killed nearly 2,000 people since April on Sunni Islamist insurgents linked to al Qaeda's local wing.

Growing violence has accompanied rising political tensions between Iraq's majority Shi'ite leaders and the Sunni community, who believe they have been marginalized since the fall of Saddam Hussein after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

Early on Monday, two car bombs exploded and a suicide bomber in another vehicle detonated his explosives in a food market in the mostly Shi'ite Muslim town of Jadidat al-Shatt in Diyala province, 40 km (25 miles) north of the capital.

The triple blasts left 13 dead and more than 50 wounded among the wreckage of fruit and vegetable stalls, local officials and police said.

"I was selling watermelon and suddenly I heard a powerful blast at the entrance to the market. I fled from the dust and smoke when a second blast turned the place into hell," said Hassan Hadi, a wounded farmer being treated in hospital.

"I was hit in my leg and lay down in shock."

Another car bomb hit a market in the religiously-mixed town of Taji, 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, killing at least eight more people, police and hospital sources said.

Later on Monday, at least 18 more people were killed in a wave of car bombing and gun attacks mainly targeting police checkpoints in northern cities like Mosul, Tikrit and Tuz Khurmato, security officials and hospital sources said.

Iraqi police also defused bombs planted at two oil wells near the northern city of Kirkuk, and while exports to Turkey's Ceyhan port were not affected, militants have increased attacks on oil facilities on which Iraq's economy heavily depends.

The recent violence is the worst since inter-communal bloodletting five years ago that killed tens of thousands and partitioned Baghdad into districts based on religious sect.

American troops left Iraq in December 2011, and although Iraqi forces are better equipped than at the height of the war, they lack the intelligence resources and air cover capability to track insurgents they enjoyed under U.S. military guidance.

The war in neighboring Syria, where Shi'ite Iran and the region's Sunni Gulf powers are backing opposing sides, has also put pressure on Iraq's own fragile sectarian and ethnic balance.

Invigorated by Syria's mostly Sunni revolt and Iraqi Sunni discontent, al Qaeda's local wing, Islamic State of Iraq, is regaining ground lost during its war with U.S. troops who left Iraq in December 2011.
