Canada?s Oil, the World?s Carbon

Posted in Beavers? by: admin

July 30th, 2012

The department is trying to do a better job this time. It will almost certainly ask all the right questions about the impact of the pipeline on the United States ? what it means for our soil, our water, our species, our cultural resources and our jobs. What is less certain is whether it will ask an essential global question that transcends borders: What is the pipeline?s likely effect on the climate?

The answer to that question may not determine the State Department?s recommendation about whether the pipeline should be built, or Mr. Obama?s decision if he is re-elected (Mitt Romney has already said he would approve the pipeline if he wins). Nor will America?s decision stop Canada?s development of the tar sands, or the sale of its oil elsewhere in the world.

But the climate question must be addressed, if only to give a full accounting of the range of consequences of developing the tar sands, an effort in which the United States will be complicit if it allows the pipeline. That includes the effect of destroying 740,000 acres of boreal forest (a vital sink for greenhouse gases); the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted in extracting the oil from the tar sands (a highly energy-intensive process); and the gases emitted by burning the oil.

The point was reinforced this month when 10 leading climate scientists sent a letter to Hillary Rodham Clinton asking the State Department to consider how helping to open Canada?s tar sands would affect the planet?s climate. ?The vast volumes of carbon in the tar sands ensure that they will play an important role in whether or not climate change gets out of hand,? the letter said. ?Understanding the role this large-scale new pipeline will play in that process is clearly crucial.?

We hope, of course, that the State Department is rigorous in addressing all relevant questions: whether America needs this oil now or in the future; how many jobs the pipeline will actually provide. The department will also be asking about the danger of oil spills. But its report will be incomplete if it does not also consider what the oil flowing through the Keystone XL would spill into the skies ? both now and in the future.

The 7 Best Products For Your Internet Marketing Business | Article ...

?

By Martin Li

Internet marketing allows you to create and sell products using a wide variety of multi-media formats. Yet, despite this wide range of choice available to you, experienced internet marketers generally advise that the following seven are the best, most reliable and safest products to sell through your online business.

Ebooks, manuals and newsletters

These are the classic ?digital book? information products that have underpinned many an internet marketing fortune. These products have many advantages, including being very easy and cheap to produce, easy and free to deliver (they can be delivered automatically and instantaneously to customers by autoresponder once payment has been made) and easy to amend and update for new information. If you don?t want to write an ebook yourself, you can outsource the writing and production to authors using sites such as elance and vworker.

Digital information products can easily be produced using a simple word processor like Word, although this risks formatting being lost during transmission to customers, which can leave your final product looking less than perfect. It is far better to convert your Word document into a portable document format (pdf) using a program such as Adobe Acrobat or one of the free variations thereof, which will fix the document?s appearance and formatting. You can also find software specifically designed for creating ebooks, although for me, a pdf does the job perfectly.

Newsletters are among the best internet marketing products you can sell since they combine the relative ease of production of ebooks with an ongoing revenue model. We will return to newsletters in future articles.

To get the most from your ebooks, include links back to your website and maybe add a few affiliate links. You can also include upsell offers.

Ebooks might be the classic information product, but these days they are just the beginning?

Audios / mp3 and podcasts

Audio products are not only simple to produce but they also have high perceived value. In their most basic form, audio products can simply be narrations of written documents, recorded into a simple digital recording program on your PC (such as audacity).

An audio can simply comprise you talking into a microphone and it doesn?t take much further work to record an interview with, for example, an expert on the subject of the audio. You can even record telephone interviews, which make the process even easier since you and the expert wouldn?t even need to be in the same time zone let alone the same place.

Videos / DVD

The internet is showing clear signs of evolving from written documents to videos. Video products are great to use as high perceived value products and as excellent means to drive traffic to your website. Videos can be streamed on your website, for example, using Flash, they can be delivered as physical DVDs and they can be offered as MPEG downloads from your site.

Videos require a little more equipment to produce than audios, but you don?t need a huge capital outlay. A simple camcorder will do for your first videos and you can also use the webcam on your computer.

Webinars

Technology has made it very easy to offer webinars to your subscribers and prospects, either as free or paid products. You might want to offer free access to your webinar if you are looking to promote an offer through the event, or you can charge if you are planning to give out a large amount of valuable content, for instance if the event will include a contribution from a recognised expert in the field (who can of course be you!).

If you are charging for your webinar, it?s a good practice to offer attendees a recording of the event. You can even offer them a physical CD recording as an upsell for an additional fee.

Subscription (membership) websites

Subscription or membership websites are amongst the best products you can create. They represent an evolution of the newsletter or online magazine into a means of offering content to a restricted (by payment) audience through a variety of media. Membership sites are cheap to run yet offer considerable potential for recurring income and automated cash flows. If you build a site that creates a sense of community amongst your members, you will also build a very loyal customer base for any further products you develop or source.

At the core of a membership site is the offer of valuable information and resources to your paid subscribers. This is content that you do not make available to the general public. You can offer different levels of membership and can increase your subscription fees as you build the content and resources on your site. Membership websites provide excellent economics as the costs of running them don?t increase with your member numbers.

Workshops and seminars

Workshops and seminars are natural, higher value progressions of webinars provided you have the confidence and expertise to justify charging fees at levels that make them economically viable. Workshops and seminars can be excellent ways to enhance your reputation and you can involve other experts in the field to further increase the attraction of your events.

Licensing rights

Licence agreements give you the right to market other people?s products and are an excellent way to kick-start your business while you are developing your own products. Licensed products should have a proven sales track record and generally come with proven sales material that you can use.

On the downside, licensed products are not your own work and may not be the most up-to-date products on the market. In the worst cases, the market for the products might already be saturated. If you haven?t acquired an exclusive licence, you might also face competition from other licensees, although you may be allowed to repackage and improve licensed products so as to make them unique to you, which would also allow you to command a higher selling price.

Now you know the best products to sell through your internet marketing business, it?s time to choose one with which you can launch or expand your business. Here?s my suggestion: audio products can often be the easiest and quickest to produce.

Iran Civil Society Review ? Uncovering, International Awards ...

We are back from our brief break! In this week?s review, Iranian organizations and individuals receive awards for their work on HIV/AIDS while Mississippi doctors try to fix healthcare inequalities by learning from Iran and Iran?s Supreme Leader puts an end to family planning. The Unveil a Woman?s Right to Unveil goes from Facebook to the streets of Iran, residents in Neyshapour take to the streets to protest inflation, and a report shows the lopsided impact of economic sanctions on women. A group of citizens cleans a park in Isfahan and the loss of Iranian identity is lamented.

Red Ribbon Award for Combatting HIV (Click to tweet)

This past week Iranian organizations and individuals were in the news receiving awards for their work to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. Afraye Sabz Association, an organization in Kermanshah Province won the Red Ribbon Award given by UNAIDS each year to recognize exceptional work in AIDS prevention. Afraye Sabz was honored for its work on HIV awareness, its educational programs, and its support for people living with HIV and their families.

In related news, the brothers Arash and Kamiar Alaei, who were imprisoned for several years in Iran on security charges, received the Elizabeth Taylor Award. The award was given to acknowledge their work in HIV prevention and human rights in the field of HIV.

?Unveil Women?s Right to Unveil? Reaches Iran?s Streets? (Click to tweet)

The ?Unveil the Right to Unveil? campaign is still underway. Many have joined in sending their photos and the message of the campaign has now reached the streets inside Iran. A recent post on the official page of the campaign shows wall graffiti in the city of Bojnord in North Eastern Iran that reads:

Free Hijab, Iranian Women?s Right?

Source: Unveil the Right to Unveil campaign page on Facebook. This photo is said to have been taken in the city of Bojnord from the entrance of a girls? high school.

In an interview with Arseh Sevom (in Persian) the journalist Masih Alinejad and campaign developer Sahar Rezazadeh discuss the campaign. They talk about its influence inside Iran and in the diaspora. They also ask women to share their stories of forced hijab. ?It?s a very important part of our history,? Alinejad states.

Me and my Free Dress

Following a request from Masih Alinejad that instead of only sending out photos women can share their stories of living through the mandatory hijab in Iran, the feminist campaign female = male / ?? = ??? asked their 137K followers to submit their experiences. Many women joined to share their memories of how they were affected and belittled on a daily basis by the proponents and enforcers of compulsory hijab. Exiled author, Ahoo Shokraie is one example. She recalls (our translation):

My mother did not let me and my sister wear a headscarf until the last days,? [when we reached puberty and had to observe the hijab]. It was my fear of the morals police headquartered at Vozara street or the craven looks in the eyes of other men that caused even my mother started to say, ?This dress is too tight.? My father would comment, ?This is too short? and my sister: ?Today is a religious holiday, don?t wear this one.? It wasn?t long before I reached the day when my own son, the grandchild of that woman who never sewed a headscarf for us, walked beside me and told me what to wear and how much my scarf could go back on my hairline.

Members of Dating Website Arrested

IRNA state news agency reports that seven members of what this agency describes as ?an unconventional dating website? have been arrested. The Iranian cyber police told IRNA that ?four of the detained people are under the age of 20.? The Iranian cyber police warned Iranian families that ?online dating is a new phenomenon spreading in Iran.? And families should ?have a close look at the activities of their children.?

Identity Crisis?

Mehr News Agency cites an education expert expressing concern over the alienation of Iranian students from their history and heritage. Morteza Nazari told Mehr, ?Textbooks lack the smallest reference to the glorious aspects of Iranian civilization and the undeniable contribution of the Iranian thoughout mankind.? He added, ?Contrary to all that has been said by the officials of the Ministry of Education, the role of families is more significant in familiarizing children with the history, culture, and civilization of Iranians than the national educational system and families will have to take matters in their own hands.?

Earlier in September 2009, the Ministry of Education announced, ?Kings will be gradually omitted from students? history books.?

Economic Sanctions Hurt Women

ICAN has published a report on the effects of economic sanctions on women in Iran, noting that women suffer in multiple ways because of the sanctions regime. The report states that economic sanctions inhibit the education of women, isolate Iranians from the international community, lead to increased violence against women linked to high levels of male?unemployment, and threaten Afghan refugees and their children.?(Read the report here ? pdf)

?We Didn?t Revolt for Chicken? (Click to tweet)

While long queues to buy chicken are epidemic in Iran, people in the city of Neyshabour took to the streets in protest; a video clip of the incident can be seen here.

In response, the general and revolutionary prosecutor of Neyshabour reportedly said, ?It is beneath the dignity of Neyshabouri people to protest in the streets, to chant slogans for one or two chickens? We didn?t revolt for bread and water [in 1979], and we are not bearing all the hardship now if anything happens, if things worsen.?

Prison Guard, a New Academic Major

Meanwhile, Iranian universities are to offer a new program called Prison guarding.

No More Family Planning, I Say (Click to tweet)

Reversing Iran?s traditionally progressive stance on family planning, Ayatollah Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, has called for an abolishment of family planning laws. Khamenei is quoted as saying, ?Our country has the capacity to house double the current population.?

In response to his recent ruling, Shargh newspaper published a report stating that in Tehran the family planning budget has now been cut to zero. The opposition website Neda-ye Sabz-e Azadi [Iran Green Voice] posted the news of a ?Mothers Social Marketing Project? launched as a pilot plan in Tehran to facilitate population growth.

Learning from Iran (Click to tweet)

The New York Times published the piece, What Can Mississippi Learn From Iran?, about the common problems delivering healthcare to poor, rural families throughout Iran and in Mississippi. The article documents the efforts of Mississippi doctor, Aaron Shirley, to learn from Iran?s model of preventative care in rural areas, which has lessened gaps in access to healthcare among the rural and urbanized populations.

Looming Postal Service default shakes mailers' confidence

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Postal Service is set this week to default on a giant payment, the latest blow illustrating Congress' slow progress toward fixing the agency's deep financial woes and one that could damage some customers' confidence.

The Postal Service has said for months that it could not afford to make the $5.5 billion payment for future retiree health benefits, which was originally due in 2011 but was delayed by Congress until August 1.

The mail agency, which relies on sales of stamps and other products rather than taxpayer funds, has said the same about a second payment due at the end of the fiscal year in September.

Congress has so far made no significant push to delay the payment again. Missing the health pre-payment, the first default in the agency's history, would not cause interruptions in service or prevent the Postal Service from paying suppliers and employees, USPS spokesman David Partenheimer said in an email.

But trade groups, mailing industry lobbyists and some business owners said the approaching default raises questions about the Postal Service's financial stability and Congress's commitment to helping remedy the agency's money woes.

Eroding confidence in the Postal Service's future adds incentive for mailers to explore alternatives to traditional mail, they said - a shift that would only deepen the agency's troubles.

"Each one of these deadlines that gets hit and missed, I think, creates a degree of uncertainty in the minds of those who make decisions about how they're going to manage specific marketing campaigns," said Ken Garner, president of the Mailing and Fulfillment Service Association, a trade group representing mailers, printers and other mailing industry businesses.

"It just creates again this movement away from mail as a product," he said.

HOW WE GOT HERE

In 2006, Congress passed a requirement that the Postal Service set aside funds each year to use toward retiree health benefits years later, when the agency's spending on benefits was forecast to balloon.

As Americans have increasingly turned to online communication, the Postal Service has steadily lost money each year and has struggled to meet the annual, multi-billion-dollar retiree benefit payment obligations.

The agency lost $5.1 billion in fiscal year 2011.

"The need for comprehensive postal reform legislation has never been more urgent," USPS's Partenheimer said in an email. "Absent legislative change, we will be forced to default on two payments due this fiscal year to prefund retiree health benefits."

Lawmakers from both parties have said for more than a year that they planned to tackle legislation to overhaul the Postal Service and help return it to profitability, but the House of Representatives and the Senate do not appear close to a deal.

The Senate passed a bill in April that would spread the retiree health payments over more years, allow the Postal Service to end Saturday mail delivery, and let it use surplus funds in a retirement account to offer early retirement incentives as a way to reduce the workforce.

House leaders said last month they hoped to bring their own bill - which would keep the health pre-payments and create oversight groups to close facilities and cut costs - up for a vote before the summer recess. But a House vote has not been scheduled, and lawmakers leave at the end of this week until after the U.S. Labor Day holiday in early September.

"It's well past time for House leaders to follow through on past assurances to hold a vote on a postal reform bill," said Democratic Senator Tom Carper, one of the Senate bill's authors.

SHIFT TO ONLINE

Most members of the mailing community believe Congress will eventually pass postal legislation. But many said they worry that the longer that takes, the more likely a postal overhaul could involve painful changes in service - facility closings, delivery delays or rate increases.

Meanwhile, the uncertainty has spurred some businesses' efforts to look for ways to move transactions online, supplement direct mail communications with email and social networking, or branch out into new fields, industry insiders said.

"Those negative news stories are not unnoticed by major advertisers, by financial services companies, by other very, very large mailers who are looking at the months ahead in 2013 and thinking, 'How should I commit my media dollars?'" said Ben Cooper, of the Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, which represents the private sector mailing industry and some 8 million workers.

"These are not good signals to the market," he said.

The movement away from mail has already begun for some businesses. Banks including JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America have used the Postal Service's struggles to encourage customers to take advantage of online services such as electronic money transfer options.

Dave Lewis, vice president of marketing at ProList in Gaithersburg, Maryland, said many of the associations he works with have stopped sending cards in the mail to remind people to renew memberships. Instead, they are sending the reminders by email.

L.F. Miller, president of Catawba Print and Mail in Hickory, North Carolina, said his company is moving away from primarily making its money on mailing services into on-demand printing and other offerings.

To be sure, mailers, including many who worry about the future of the Postal Service, say the mail is still the best method of communication for many businesses. Emails can get caught in filters, and older Americans are not active on social networks. The Postal Service also works extensively with big mailers to keep them using the mail.

Don Jarred, vice president of production services for Aspen Marketing Services, said direct mail continues to be a major feature in clients' marketing plans.

And Neil Metviner, chief marketing officer at OSG Billing, said that while some of his customers have expanded into electronic billing for convenience, he did not see his business changing as a result of fear about the Postal Service.

Even so, some mailers are eyeing alternatives.

"I don't have faith in making money on the mailing side anymore," Miller said.

New day, old bickering on taxes between Obama, GOP

Graphic shows the annualized growth rate of the U.S. economy

(AP) ? New day, old bickering between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans.

Obama used his Saturday radio and Internet address to finger GOP lawmakers for a stalemate that could increase taxes on Americans next year. A leading Republican senator cast the president and his Democratic Party as obstructionists who want to place the tax burden on businesses during an economic slowdown.

Obama pressed the Republican-controlled House to extend Bush-era tax cuts for households making $250,000 or less while letting lower rates on wealthier taxpayers expire and go up. The Democratic-controlled Senate narrowly passed such a measure this past week; the House is not expected to follow suit.

"Instead of doing what's right for middle-class families and small-business owners, Republicans in Congress are holding these tax cuts hostage until we extend tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans," Obama said.

Responding on behalf of the congressional GOP, Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said Obama's plan would do more harm to the economy and criticized him with almost identical language. He called for extending current tax rates for all taxpayers and spending 2013 overhauling and simplifying the tax code.

"Raising taxes as our economy continues to struggle is not a solution, and the majority of Americans and businesses understand that," Hatch said. "The president and his Washington allies need to stop holding America's economy hostage in order to raise taxes on those trying to lead our economic recovery."

The competing views frame today's Washington political debate and the presidential contest. With the economy standing as the main issue on voters' minds, Obama, rival Mitt Romney and lawmakers of both parties are engaged in brinkmanship and political test votes ahead of the November election and the Dec. 31 deadline when the Bush-era tax rates expire.

Obama used his address to take a rare swipe at Romney, even though he didn't mention his challenger by name.

"Republicans in Congress and their nominee for president believe that the best way to create prosperity in America is to let it trickle down from the top," he said. "They believe that if our country spends trillions more on tax cuts for the wealthy, we'll somehow create jobs ? even if we have to pay for it by gutting things like education and training and by raising middle-class taxes. They're wrong."

Saturday's dueling addresses come a day after the government reported that weak consumer spending held growth to an annual rate of just 1.5 percent in the second quarter. That was lower than the 2 percent rate of the first quarter and less than what's necessary to help drive down the unemployment rate, now stuck at 8.2 percent.

The White House budget office on Friday also predicted that the economy for this year will grow at a modest 2.6 percent annual rate and that the jobless rate will average 8 percent. It forecasts 2.6 percent growth next year, down from the 3.0 percent it predicted in February.

Rousey, Kaufman, Carano ? The World According to Munah

In case you were wondering, female mixed martial arts is still very much alive and kicking.? The latest installment of the Invicta Fighting Championships is this Saturday night, and in August, Strikeforce returns to Showtime with a main event that will feature champ Ronda Rousey attempting to remove challenger Sarah Kaufman's arm in the most painful, non-surgical way possible.? Yep.? Wimmins.? They be fightin'.? So in the spirit of all this impending violence perpetrated by the fairer sex, Cagewriter tracked down 125-pound female fighter Munah Holland, who knocked out Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm two weeks ago at Matrix Fights (a regional show in Philadelphia) to get her perspective on things.? She is, after all, on the front lines.

Things to know about Holland: she's a product of the Tiger Schulmann MMA system, and manages one of the organization's gyms in New Jersey.? In 2004, she won the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, transitioned to professional fighting with Chuck Norris' ill-fated kickboxing promotion the World Combat League, and now fights in the cage, shimmying out of the clutches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and feeding them knuckles until they fall.? ?In her MMA debut, Holland brutalized Kim Couture for three rounds; more recently, she's KO'd top New England fighter Marianna Kheyfets in Bellator and put away Damm.

That's Holland.? Here's what she had to say about some of her fellow fighters:

On Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey - "Ronda is, I would say, this deliciously deadly, amazing person.? She has something that, when I watch her fight, is incredibly contained, and at the same time, explosive.? It's really fun to watch, and her ground game is sick.? She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, no matter her opponent in front of her.? I can't wait for the upcoming fight between her and Sarah Kaufman ? I think that's going to be a great fight."

On top Strikeforce bantamweight challenger and former champ Sarah Kaufman - "I've watched Sarah for a long time, because as a female martial artist, she was one of the girls I knew about first.? She's got really, really powerful hands ? like, lead in her hands.? She's very dangerous.? She's constantly evolving? got a lot of heart, and like Ronda, she's a force to be reckoned with.? And Sarah has some very good wrestling, so it's going to be interesting, because if Sarah can maintain her wrestling defense and use her hands and use her range, it could be a really interesting fight.? If it stays standing, Sarah can do some damage with her hands.? We haven't really seen Ronda's chin, we don't know how much damage it can take."? Her prediction for the August 18 Strikeforce title fight?? "If it stays standing, Sarah's going to have the advantage.? If it goes to the ground, my gut says Ronda."

On former Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate - "I love Miesha.? I once said this out loud and people heard me, but if you have a bum that looks like Miesha's, you've got to plaster it everywhere.? She's beautiful, she's tough as nails.? And that fight with Ronda, that was sick."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Gina Carano - "Gina, I think, has done a world of good for female fighting in general.? She's chosen her own path, and gone the way she feels where her future lies.? You have to do whatever it is you have to do in this world to have a life and a good living, but I thank her for exposing female martial artists to the world, and making it important for people to watch and making it exciting for people to watch, and proving that, regardless of whether it's females or males, it's just a great sport to watch.? She proved that the numbers can be there, that the seats can be filled for female mixed martial artists just as they can for men."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Cris "Cyborg" Santos ? "Cyborg would scare most grown men away in the cage.? The first time I saw Cris Cyborg, I was like, 'Uh, this woman is just frightening.'? And frightening in a good way.? What a beast.? What a beast of mass proportions.? This girl? frightening strength, amazing ability coming from Chute Boxe, can really take so much.? She's just like a pitbull.? She's just going to keep on coming and keep on coming."

On female MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa - "Long before Gina or Cyborg came into the picture, you'd hear about Tara just making her way through one person after another in the circuit ? especially in New Jersey, where she's got a lot of fans.? For me, she was definitely an inspiration.? We can do it, we can do it really well and with a lot of class."

On hoping to fight in the UFC one day - "Oh yeah.? Some little girls want to grow up and wear pink slippers, but for me, the thought of being in the UFC?? I hope it gets to that point for women, I hope it gets to that point in my MMA lifetime.? We can only hope for that.? Who wouldn't want to be in that arena?"

On Dana White reconsidering his stance on not allowing women in the UFC's Octagon - "I don't know any woman who wouldn't want to see women in the UFC, and I hope Dana White considers that at some point.? Because we'll bring the crowds, we'll fill the seats, and people really enjoy watching it."

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? So what?

Facebook shares hit new low after earnings

CNBC's Julia Boorstin reports key executives at Facebook are focused on a shift to smartphones and the mobile world, but some investors are concerned about the strategy.

    By NBC News wire services

Facebook shares were down 15 percent to just below $23 in trading Friday after the company's lack of a financial forecast reinforced concerns about its mobile strategy, which will result in rapid cash burn in the near term.

The decline pulled the stock to its lowest price since its IPO in mid-May.

The social network, which reported its first quarterly results as public company on Thursday, managed to just beat revenue expectations.

"Based on the aftermarket reaction to the earnings it appears that investors wanted more than a slight beat," Piper Jaffray & Co analysts said in a client note.

Investors who have been worried about how the social network would make money from mobile advertising had also hoped that the company would signal that revenue growth was picking up.

JPMorgan Securities analysts said the stock could also be coming under pressure because of a lock-up expiring on August 19 when some early investors will be able to sell their shares, flooding the market with stock.

    Reuters contributed to this report.

ASUS breaks through 120Hz refresh rate with VG2788H gamer monitor refresh

ASUS continues to update its VG monitor series, and this time it's got something a little more impressive than an integrated IR transmitter. According to FlatpanelsHD, the VG278HE has knocked through the 120Hz barrier that most monitors come up against. The 27-incher can be configured to a buttery smooth 144Hz for 2D and 3D gaming, while inputs include HDMI, dual-link DVI and VGA. The monitor also supports NVIDIA's 3D Vision 2 -- but you'll have to buy the rest of the parts separately. We've reached out to ASUS about pricing and availability, but until we hear more, you'll just have to imagine those breezy refresh rates.

Update: ASUS told us we can expect to see the display hit shelves sometime in Q4, but noted that pricing has not been finalized.

Making Your Beer Crystal Clear | E Publishing

Beer is about a lot more than just a great tasting beverage. The fact that a culture has grown up around the joy of making and enjoying fine beer testifies how much beer has become part of how our culture works. The drinking of the beverage is only partially about the taste of the brew itself and very much about where you have your beer, what you drink it out of, how the beer looks in the glass and who you are drinking it with. And while you as a home made beer brewer cannot control many of those factors, you can control the quality and ambiance of the beer you make so it not only tastes great but is visually appealing as well.

If you pour a commercial beer from a bottle or a can, you may not be aware of how much those beer makers put into not just the taste but the affect of other senses have on the beer drinking experience. The way the beer pours, the aroma as you pour it, the head that wells up in your mug and how the beer looks in the glass all are just as important as the taste itself. The emphasis the big beer producers put on ascetics is so extreme that they even make the sound the can makes when you "pop a cold one" to be unique because they know that sound alone can prepare you to receive the taste of a great beer drinking experience.

The truth is none of that will change whether the beer itself is of high quality or is good to drink. But visual appeal matters. One area of visual appeal that you have some control over when making your own beer at home is clarity. Clarity simply refers to how the beer looks in the glass. If you can see through the beer and it is a consistent beige or amber color, that is visually appealing. But if things are floating around in the beer, even if they are perfectly harmless byproducts of the brewing process, that can diminish how inviting your beer is to enjoy and even diminish how enjoyable the beer is to drink even if the beer itself is of high quality.

A lot of the "stuff" that floats around is beer comes from the yeast that is crucial to the fermentation process that makes beer beer. Some yeasts are better than others about settling out of the beer during fermentation. Another source of visible material in the beer comes from what is referred to as non-microbiological particles or NMPs which are a byproduct of the brewing process. Again, none of these visible materials are harmful to consume nor do they reduce the value of the beer. They just look bad and hurt the clarity of the beer which is one way beer is measured for quality.

Many of the NMPs are introduced during the initial creation of the wort which is phase one of any brewing operation. The wort is boiled at a high temperature for a significant enough period of time to cause the proteins in the ingredients to break down and become part of the fluidity of the wort rather than remain in a substance state or a "floc" which remains visible in the finished product. To avoid this make sure your boil sustains a temperature of 215F for 90 minutes to assure complete processing of the proteins.

Another important brewing step that you can do to reduce visible agents in your beer is to cool the wort very quickly. By bringing the temperature down rapidly, the clarity is vastly enhanced as is the flavor and overall quality of the beer. The best way to accomplish such rapid cooling is to move the wort quickly from the brewing process to a very cool environment or using a specialized wort cooler to quickly bring that temperature down and eliminate many of the flocs that might be there if the cooling goes more slowly.

Seeking beer clarity can become a major passion of yours as a home brewer and there is a whole science to using clarifying agents such as Irish Moss to enhance beer clarity without diminishing beer quality or taste. Learning good techniques for making your beer clear and appealing is just another step in your ongoing quest to become the best amateur beer making possible. And that is a quest worth pursuing.

Slay the 3 Dragons at the Doors of Wisdom!

Have you ever been on a Vision Quest? Recently I traveled to Arizona for my Spirit Walk and Vision Quest, in Aravaipa Canyon, south east of Phoenix. When you're on a vision quest you're all alone. It's a school like no other; there are no classrooms, no books, and no teachers at the front of the room leading the lessons. It's just you and nature. But there is still plenty of teaching going on. How can that be? Where is the teaching coming from and how are the lessons learned?

A vision quest takes you out of your normal environment, removing you from all normal responsibilities and habitual cues (aka "distractions"). Very often you're fasting, so even the distractions of eating and digesting are removed. In nature, in silence, with no distractions for an extended period of time, your senses become heightened. This helps facilitate an altered state of awareness that isn't normally accessed. In this state of awareness a space is made where you experience thoughts you don't normally have; these types of thoughts we typically call insights, wisdom, and guidance.

Wisdom is rare and cherished because it comes from a place not normally accessed by most people in day-to-day living. We all typically know it when we hear it, but we're not always able to produce it for ourselves. Why is that? What stops the average person from being a truly wise and insightful person? What is it about wisdom that makes it so hard to come by?

The answer: Three Dragons. To access true wisdom, insight, and guidance you must navigate past three dragons on your journey. Each of these dragons is unique and formidable and each has won more battles than it's lost. These block your entrance into the realms of wisdom inherent in your mind, heart, and soul.

In his book Theory U - Leading from the Future as it Emerges, author Otto Scharmer distinguishes these dragons as the Voice of Judgment (VOJ), Voice of Cynicism (VOC), and the Voice of Fear (VOF). To access true wisdom you must do battle with each of these three dragons, or voices, and emerge victorious.

To access the creativity and wisdom available in your mind you must overcome the Voice of Judgment. This is that voice most of us are very familiar with. You know the one, the one that says "That's a stupid idea." Or, "Who do you think you are?" Or, "Play it safe and keep your head down beneath the mow line." These voices of judgment are most often automatic and largely subconscious, habitual, response patterns to anything outside the norm. Therefore, to access anything OUTSIDE the norm (like wisdom) we must be aware of this dragon and be prepared to do battle.

To access the rich depth of wisdom and joy-filled love and connectivity available in your heart, you must overcome the Voice of Cynicism. This is the voice that keeps you "safely" separate from others and the world, putting everything and everyone at arm's length. This voice is afraid to be vulnerable and sees vulnerability as a direct threat to survival. This voice says "Oh no, we already tried that before and we got hurt, remember? We ain't going there again." Or worse, "You can't trust anyone," "It's better to hurt others before they hurt you," and the infamous "It's a dog-eat-dog world out there." This voice, this dragon, will keep you separate, alone, and bitter.

And finally, to access your deepest wisdom and guidance, the wisdom and guidance of your soul, you must overcome the Voice of Fear. While the voices of judgment and cynicism are formidable, they can't hold a candle to the voice of fear. This is the ultimate dragon at the gate that goes right to your core animalistic instincts for survival. This voice strives to maintain the status quo and holds onto what you already have and know. Doing battle with this voice, this dragon, can feel like death itself. All of your deepest fears can become activated: "I'll be broke and homeless," "I'll be rejected and ridiculed," "I'll be all alone." Because some of your most powerful wisdom and insights reside in your soul, it of course has the biggest dragon to slay.

I bet you can recognize each of these voices and dragons in you. I'm sure you've done battle with each of them at some point in your life. Did you win? Or did they win? The truth is, we win some and we lose some. But the most wise, authentic, inspired and fulfilling life is marked by simply being aware and being willing to engage these battles. Whether you win or lose is not so much the point. But did you engage whole-heartedly and honorably?

These "battles" are only with ourselves. As one of my favorite trainers, T. Harv Eker has said "A warrior is one who conquers oneself." Your best "weapons" for these types of "battles" are awareness, courage, and compassion. First, be aware that these dragons, these voices will be on your path. Just being aware is half the battle itself! Second, have the courage to face them and engage them. Don't back down; know that HOW you engage is more important than winning. And third, have compassion for not only yourself, but have compassion for these aspects of yourself; have compassion for these dragons and voices. Ultimately they are far more afraid than you are - you need to step up and show them the way out of their suffering and smallness.

All this is not to say that sometimes these voices SHOULD be listened to. They really are there to protect us. From their limited perspective they think they are helping and protecting us. However, more often than not, they are way overprotective. Knowing when to listen and when to ignore is part of a discernment you can develop over time. As you get to know your voices and dragons they become more and more familiar, making them a lot easier to sort out and move on through and beyond.

    Try this:

You can raise your awareness, as the first important step to winning the battle with the dragons at your gate. Take out a piece of paper, divide it into three sections and label the first section Voice of Judgment, the second section Voice of Cynicism, and the third section Voice of Fear.

Take a deep breath and ask yourself "What are some automatic judgments I often make that keep me safe and small?" And write down whatever comes up. Keep asking yourself that question until the answers stop coming. Then do the same process asking, "In what ways am I cynical and keeping everyone and everything at arms distance, staying separate and alone?" And finally ask yourself, "What are my biggest fears stopping me from truly being who I am and doing what I came here to do?"

Just asking yourself these questions and listening to yourself is an act of wisdom that will move you closer to your mojo!

    Scleral Lenses For Keratoconus

For people with Keratoconus the RGP, or Rigid Gas Permeable contact lens is still one of the most effective ways to correct vision. Traditional, or Corneal RGP lenses are small, slightly smaller than the coloured iris, and fit directly onto the cornea. For people who have a problem with the fit of these lenses the Scleral lens may be an alternative.

First some background. Keratoconus is a disease of the cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye. In people with Keratoconus the cornea thins and distorts outwards into an irregular 'cone' shape.

It is this distortion or the eye that results in reduced vision as the light entering the eye can not be properly focused onto the retina. What happens is that the light, instead of hitting one focus point, is spread out over many points on the retina and this causes blurring and 'ghosting' .

Spectacles cannot be aligned properly to deal with the multiple focus points caused by the irregular shape of an eye with Keratoconus, and hydrogel (or soft) lenses tend to be thin and contour to the same shape as the cornea (although there are some thicker soft lenses that are better at keeping their own shape and therefore go someway towards the benefits of RGP lenses).

RGP lenses work so well because they maintain their own shape and trap a layer of fluid between the lens and the cornea. The combination forms and artificial single surface that acts like a regular shape cornea.

Because RGP lenses are so small the edge of the lens can irritate the inner surface of the eyelid and this can make wearing them uncomfortable.

Also the lenses can pop out quite easily, particularly if the cornea of the eye with Keratoconus is quite steeply curved (think about balancing a saucer on the end of a rugby ball).

Another factor affecting RGP suitability is the environment in which you live or work. RGP lenses can be a problem in very dry and or dusty conditions because dust can get behind the lens or around the edge of the lens quite easily.

An alternative for Keratoconus is a Scleral lens.

This is also a rigid lens but is much larger in diameter than a normal RGP. Where the normal RGP is slightly smaller than the coloured part of your eye and fits only on the cornea, a scleral lens is designed so that the edges sit on the sclera or white part of your eye.

Because of this they tend not to cause irritation of either the eyelid or the cornea.

Of course they have some disadvantages.

They are more expensive and require more complex checks to get the correct fit.

They are also a bit scary to consider putting into your eye as they can be as much as one inch or twenty five millimetres in diameter.

Nevertheless they represent a great alternative when RGP lenses cannot fit properly or where a persons job or lifestyle makes RGP lenses impractical.

Other alternatives include hybrid lenses, a bonded combination of RGP and Hydrogel in a single lens, and Piggy back solutions where RGPs are worn over Hydrogel.
