No joke: Great performance can't save 'Idol'

Heejun Han delivered his best performance of the season Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the competition.

The Heejun Han musical comedy tour ended on ?American Idol? on Thursday, ironically following his best solo performance of the season.

After weeks of getting not-so-subtle hints that he should cut back on the jokes, culminating with Steven Tyler?s less-veiled swipe a week ago, Han cut out the act and did a straight-up performance of Donny Hathaway's ?A Song for You.? It was sweetly done and earned him a standing ovation.

But Jimmy Iovine summed up the situation best in his Thursday video clip. He praised Han?s effort but noted, ?My problem is I don?t think he sings as well as the other eight contestants at this point in the show.?

And therein lies the paradox that characterized Han?s stint on ?Idol.? He wasn?t quite compelling enough of an entertainer to win in the Taylor Hicks style, and he wasn?t a good enough pure vocalist to take the title that way. Whatever he did was going to win him some support ? he definitely has a future in entertainment somewhere ? but not enough to win a competition like this one.

Even on his best night, he legitimately had one of the weakest performances because everyone else was at their best as well. Since the judges did not use their save to keep him around, Han finishes in ninth place and will have to pack his things just after he moved into the ?Idol? mansion. It will definitely be a less funny place without him around.

The more shocking news was that Skylar Laine was in the bottom three, along with Hollie Cavanagh, who deserved that fate. That means Laine will likely get the fawning from the judges that?s been reserved for Elise Testone?as they try to keep the star women on the show without having to use their save so early. Maybe it was divine payback for picking Miranda Lambert as her idol, considering Lambert's husband, Blake Shelton, works for "The Voice."

Of course, there are other female stars that the judges seem less eager to have hang around. Guest performer Nicki Minaj, for example. She asked host Ryan Seacrest if she could come back and be a guest judge, and while their mouths said ?any time? the body language and facial expressions said ?no shot.? Especially if Jennifer Lopez has a say. She did not look happy at the thought of a challenge. Simon Cowell has more of a chance at being invited to judge again than Minaj does.

Hitting the other end of the excitability meter was the Eric Benet cameo. He appeared briefly onstage to tell DeAndre Brackensick how much he appreciated the young man's cover of his tune "Sometimes I Cry" on Wednesday, and the ?Idol? hopeful reacted as if ?he?d won the lottery. Mariah Carey did not do the same for Joshua Ledet, but she did tweet that she liked his performance of "Without You." Stunningly, she did not mention having worked with Randy Jackson. Maybe that feedback loop works only one way?

Brackensick avoided the bottom three this past week, but he can?t rest easy. Given the unpredictability of the voting so far, the only sure thing is that with Han out, there will be less irreverence in the show next week.

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Osama bin Laden lived in five safe houses while on the run in Pakistan and fathered four children ? two of them born in government hospitals, his youngest widow has told investigators.

The details of bin Laden's life as a fugitive in Pakistan are contained in the interrogation report of Amal Ahmed Abdel-Fatah al-Sada, bin Laden's 30-year-old Yemeni widow. They appear to raise fresh questions over how bin Laden was able to remain undetected for so long in Pakistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, despite being the subject of a massive international manhunt.

Details from the report were first published by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

The Associated Press obtained a copy on Friday.

Al-Sada is currently in Pakistani custody, along with bin Laden's two other wives and several children. They were arrested after the U.S raid that killed bin Laden in May in his final hideout in the Pakistani army town of Abbottabad. The U.S. Navy SEALs shot her in the leg during the operation.

Mohammed Amir Khalil, a lawyer for the three widows, said the women would be formally charged for illegally staying in Pakistan on April 2. That charge carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.

Since the raid that killed bin Laden, it has been known that he lived mostly in Pakistan since 2002.

Al-Sada's account says she flew to Pakistan in 2000 and traveled to Afghanistan where she married bin Laden before the Sept. 11 attacks.

After that, the family "scattered" and she traveled to Karachi in Pakistan. She later met up with bin Laden in Peshawar and then moved to the Swat Valley, where they lived in two houses. They moved one more time before settling in Abbottabad in 2005.

According to the report, al-Sada said that two of her children were born in government hospitals, but that she stayed only "two or three hours" in the clinics on both occasions. The charge sheet against the three women says that they gave officials fake identities.

During the manhunt for bin Laden, most U.S. and Pakistani officials said that bin Laden was likely living somewhere along the remote Afghanistan-Pakistan border, possibly in a cave.

The fact he was living in populated parts of Pakistan raised suspicions elements in the Pakistani security forces may have been hiding him. U.S. officials have said they have found no evidence this was the case.

Doomsday drivel: promoting nuclear paranoia

The Doomsday Machine, a sometimes mendacious and frequently anti-scientific book, has one claim to novelty. It combines hysterical opposition to all things nuclear with an equally deranged climate-change denialism. One wonders both why the publishers published, and who they imagine will enjoy it.

The authors argue that concern about climate change is largely a public relations exercise by nuclear power lobbyists to revive their fortunes. And that it is sustained by corrupted scientists at the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in league with ?new nuclear romantics? and ?environmentalists [who believe] humanity deserves to be punished for its poor stewardship of the Earth.?

From this original vantage point, they apparently see no need to challenge the argument that low-carbon nuclear energy can help combat climate change. So instead, a chapter purporting to slay ?the myth that nuclear power is green? spends its time rehearsing ludicrous attacks on named environmentalists and climate scientists, such as Gaia inventor James Lovelock, for having the temerity to support nuclear power.

Other sections attack such straw men as the notions that nuclear energy is ?too cheap to meter?, and that ?nuclear radiation is harmless?. Since nobody has said such things for half a century, to attack them is puerile.

Of course, there are some serious drawbacks to nuclear power that warrant proper attention - as there are drawbacks to all sources of energy. In the real world, we have to make choices about how we power our world. But the authors fail to make any meaningful comparisons between nuclear and its rivals. Do they know, for instance, that burning coal is a bigger day-to-day radiation hazard than nuclear energy?

Martin Cohen is a philosopher, who characterises himself as standing beside Karl Popper against Al Gore. Andrew McKillop is an energy economist and past proponent of the idea of ?peak oil?, though here he appears to deny the proposition. I fear their starting premise that nuclear energy is a ?doomsday machine? rather unhinged their thinking.

Scientists found hammerhead sharks have twin cousin

The newly found scalloped hammerhead shark faces similar existential threats as its look-alike fishy cousin.

Researchers recently discovered a new species of scalloped hammerhead shark, yet unnamed, that closely resembles its endangered look-alike.?

The recent findings suggest that previous estimates of the number of hammerhead sharks was likely inflated since they had included the newfound species.? The reason for the late identification is explained by the roughly 20 fewer vertebrae the new species has and differences in their DNA.?

"It's a classic case of long-standing species misidentification that not only casts further uncertainty on the status of the real scalloped hammerhead, but also raises concerns about the population status of this new species," said Mahmood Shivji, professor at Nova Southeastern University, LiveScience reports.

The new species was originally detected in 2005 off the eastern coast of the United States, when Shivji?s research team was examining the DNA of sharks initially perceived to be hammerheads due to their physical characteristics.?

Genetic assessment shows that approximately 7 percent of the sharks detected in US waters originally thought to be scalloped hammerheads belong to the newly discovered species, as scientists from Nova Southern University and the University of South Carolina had confirmed.

Chronic overfishing and finning had resulted into the dramatic reduction of shark populations around the globe and growing concerns about the impact their eventual extinction might have to the ocean ecosystem.

"It's very important to officially recognize, name and learn more about this new hammerhead species and the condition of its populations through systematic surveys," Shivji said, according to the United Press International. "Without management intervention to curtail its inadvertent killing, we run the risk that overfishing could eradicate an entire shark species before its existence is even properly acknowledged."

Although finning is banned in the US, it is estimated that 73 million sharks are killed annually to support a booming international trade.? Shark finning is the process in which fishermen cut of their fins and sell them to mainly Asian markets where it constitutes the main ingredient in a traditional soup delicacy. It is a lucrative trade since these species are sold for about $120 for every 2.2 lbs.

Hammerheads are usually found in tropical and temperate waters along coastlines and continental shelves stretching from the Caribbean to Australia.

Their length ranges from roughly 13 to 20 feet long and weigh from 500 to 1000 pounds, according to National Geographic.?

Although the hammerhead is considered as harmless to humans, it is a keen hunter that uses its heavily serrated teeth to capture its prey, consisted of stingrays, squid, octopus, and other sharks.

Hammerhead sharks first appeared 20 million years ago and belong to the family of Sphyrnidae, named as such due to their strangely-shaped flattened heads with protruded eyeballs at each end, a trait that has made the species into one of the most recognizable fish in the world.?

Pitbull Would Love To 'Follow In Will Smith's Footsteps'

'He's the blueprint of what any artist in the music business would look up to,' Pit tells MTV News on the set of 'Men in Black III' music video.

He wants it all, chico. Pitbull is a proven hitmaker, so it's no wonder that he was tapped to record "Back in Time," the first single from the upcoming "Men in Black III."

Who knows? Maybe the union will lead to a future Hollywood collaboration. Not only is Pit a fan of the "Men in the Black" franchise; he's a big fan of star Will Smith as well.

"I think he's the blueprint of what any artist in the music business would look up to and idolize what he's done," Pit told MTV News on Monday night from the L.A. set of his "Back in Time" video. "As far as not only in the music business, but also in Hollywood, how he's gone from not only one of the best artists musically [to] also one of the best actors, I would say, around the world."

It was Big Willie himself who recorded the theme songs for the first two installments of the "MIB" trilogy (1997's "Men in Black" and 2002's "Black Suits Comin' "). Now, Pit takes the reins and looked to a sample of Mickey and Sylvia's 1950s classic "Love Is Strange" for inspiration. According to the Miami rap artist, the song falls right in line with the upcoming film's time-traveling plotline.

Pitbull is looking forward to the day he and Smith can collaborate again.

"I think in every way, shape and form, we'd love to follow in Will Smith's footsteps," he said. "We're working on the music for the movie, and hopefully, one day, we'll work in a movie together."

As we?ve highlighted in our recent social customer service posts, while most brands have now grasped the value of social media marketing, very few are investing properly in genuine social customer service.?It?s timely, then, that with The Social Customer 2012?(London) just days away, immediate future?have published a free white paper highlighting the costs and benefits of implementing social customer service.

Adam Lewis, Managing Consultant at the London social media agency, put it this way:??There?s often a fear that social will open up Pandora?s Box for customer service teams - an unquantifiable wave of hard-to-handle customer interactions?.

While there are lots of reasons why organisations haven?t adopted social customer services, scalability, or the feared lack of it, may well be the #1 reason why ? as?Frank Eliason?is quoted as saying in the Holmes Report today ? ?social customer service has been a complete failure?.

So is this fear well-founded?

At my?Monitoring Social Media Boot-camp in 2010 Giles Palmer, MD of the UK monitoring company,Brandwatch, explained how, out of 100,000 mentions that they monitored for a client over 6 months, they highlighted about 4,500 and the client ended up responding to less than 2,000. Anyone who understands social media listening will echo this finding. If you?ve got smart analysts, you don?t need to deal with noise.

I suspect, though, the fear is more about attracting, or even generating, thousands more social media queries simply by offering a social media customer service channel. Yet this smacks of brands putting their head in the sand. As immediate future point out ?In this multichannel world [customers] expect more support through channels that are convenient to them, not you?. And to hammer this message home, they add ?The fastest growing age group of social media users between now and 2015 will be 65-75 year olds?.

The Page 99 Test: Elizabeth Brake&#39;s "Minimizing Marriage"

Elizabeth Brake was educated at The Universities of Oxford (B.A.) and St. Andrews (M. Litt., PhD). Since 2000 she has taught in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Calgary, Canada; in 2011-2012 she is a Visiting Associate Professor at Arizona State University.

She applied the ?Page 99 Test? to her new book, Minimizing Marriage: Marriage, Morality, and the Law, and reported the following:

Turning to page 99, one finds a central theme of the book: preferential treatment for romantic couples is a form of unjustified discrimination (I call this ?amatonormativity?). In Chapter 4, ?Special Treatment for Lovers,? I argue that friendships, and overlapping networks of friends and sexual partners, have just as much ethical value as romantic love relationships. Friendships and groups provide just as much opportunity for reciprocal care and can be just as fulfilling to their members. Yet socially those outside romantic love relationships face stereotyping, various forms of social discrimination, and legal discrimination. On page 99, I address the objection that the romantic love drive is biologically rooted and so we really are better off satisfying that drive in romantic love relationships ? and that that can justify discrimination! On page 99 (actually I'm cheating ? the first sentence begins on page 98!) I'm discussing Helen Fisher's view in Anatomy of Love:

Dyadic pair-bonding, with its characteristic stages of limerence (?being in love?) and attachment, on her view, has a neurochemical basis. It is a drive analogous to hunger, thirst, sleep, the maternal instinct, and sex. This suggests a rationale for preferential treatment of amorous dyads. ... We might go further and argue that amatonormative social pressures are beneficial because they guide us to satisfy this drive.

But even if we accept Fisher?s controversial view, it would not justify amatonormativity. Fisher argues that humans are instinctually serial monogamists?her research suggests that the natural duration of a romantic love cycle is four years, corresponding to the normal gap between pregnancies in conditions without contraception and when women breastfeed. Moreover, she holds that extramarital sex has a physiological basis. Her account could not support the amatonormative preference for exclusive and enduring relationships. In fact, marriage and the amatonormative ideal would themselves frustrate the drives for serial monogamy and sexual variety. Furthermore, Fisher suggests that polygamy also has a physiological basis; while she sees it as a ?secondary? strategy, she acknowledges that this is controversial?some anthropologists suggest that it is a dominant human urge. Finally, Fisher recognizes the emergence of a new family form, which she calls an ?association???a brand-new web of kin based on friendship instead of blood.? [Footnote: Fisher, Anatomy of Love, p. 305] This suggests that her view does allow some plasticity in the drive for companionship.

But let us imagine that society and policy develop ?serial-amatonormativity,? privileging, and pressuring people into and out of, four-year pair-bonding relationships. Marriage could have a four-year limit, and family and friends could express concern and disapproval when relationships lasted too long. Such discrimination would still be morally unjustified. There is ample evidence, already noted, of sexual minorities; privileging serial male-female monogamy would impose costs on these people unnecessarily. There is no need to privilege serial monogamy in order to remove barriers to it....

I go on, in the second part of the book, to argue for a new form of legal marriage, ?minimal marriage,? which could support friendships and care networks and so does not discriminate unjustly against those outside of romantic love relationships.

So does page 99 reflect the quality of the whole? To a certain extent ? it defends one of the book's central themes, it engages in measured argument, and it is 'transdisciplinary', bringing biological and anthropological research to bear on moral philosophical questions. I like to think the book contains more original argument than discussion of others' views, however, and page 99 does focus mainly on Fisher! Beyond that, I must let the reader judge.

Personal injury law firm Donns LLP placed in administration | Injury ...

A Manchester law firm which specialises in personal injury compensation claims has been placed in administration.

The administration of Donns LLP, which has offices at City Wharf, New Bailey Street, Manchester, is being handled by Toby Underwood and Robert Hebenton of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Founded by solicitor Raymond Donn in 1969, the firm?s website says that Donns LLP is ?recognised as one of the leading specialist law firms in the UK, at the forefront of financial mis-selling and personal injury litigation dealing with claims both in the UK and abroad.?

Rival law firm Irwin Mitchell, which has an office in Manchester, has acquired ?several hundred? in-progress personal injury cases from Donns in a deal with its administrators.

The deal ? for an undisclosed sum ? will enable Irwin Mitchell to approach former Donns clients for permission to continue with the cases.

Andrew Tucker, chief executive, personal legal services at Irwin Mitchell, said: ?Irwin Mitchell confirms that it has agreed an arrangement with PWC as Administrators appointed in respect of Donns LLP for the transfer of the firm?s personal injury files to Irwin Mitchell, subject to clients` consent.

?This is welcome news for those clients of Donns who would otherwise have been left without a solicitor to act for them in their case.

?We appreciate this will be worrying for many of the people affected and we are therefore writing to each client to advise them of the situation and to offer them the choice of appointing Irwin Mitchell, as a respected personal injury law firm, to act for them or to appoint another solicitor of their choosing.
