The Finer Things: Summer Activities and Crafts for Kids
With so much free time during the summer, we encourage parents to plan stimulating activities that get kids active through the non-school months. Celebrations.com is an excellent online resource for creative party planning ideas, delicious recipes, DIY how-to's and tutorials, and everyday activities. They even have a section dedicated just for kids! Here are?six amazing summer activities and crafts that will be great "bored busters" for your family this season.

Take advantage of the great summer sun and teach a little bit of science at the same time. Crafts using solar power or solar?energy are a great lesson for young minds, and easy to understand from a young age. Teach your kids about the wonders of the sun, it's ability to create energy, and how humans, plants, and animals?have been using it to survive for thousands of years! How Does the Sun Provide Heat? by Discovery Kids
Light sensitive photo?paper can be purchased at any local craft store, and imagined into a million different possibilities. Go on a family nature hike and grab native plants and natural objects that have interesting shapes. Place these objects on the light sensitive paper in direct sunlight, and at the end of the day you will have amazing designs that can be framed or placed in a summer scrapbook or journal. Sun Prints Summer Craft for Kids by Celebrations.com
To continue the sun amusement, recycle your?leftover crayons from the end of the school year for these next two crafts. Create crazy solar made crayons by breaking up your old crayons (whether by hand or in a food processor- your choice) and placing the bits and pieces into a cupcake tin. Silicon molds also work. Place on the patio for the day (it's best to start this craft in the morning to get the most sun) and allow to cool off by bringing them inside. When they are cooled, pop out the crayon shapes and you have a whole new set of art supplies. You can vary this craft by adding fine glitter, using different molds with shapes, and creating different color combinations. Solar Crayons Summer Craft for Kids by Celebrations.com
If your kids are too old to use crayons to draw?anymore, you can use discarded crayons to make cool wall art to decorate their rooms! Using a hot glue gun, place various crayons in a funky design around a white canvas. Place the canvas outside on a slant for a drip effect, or flat for a pooling effect, and watch the art transform. More advanced artists can use sticker letters to stencil out their names or favorite quotes. And for those rainy days, this craft can also be done inside with a blow dryer! Melted Crayon Wall Art for Kids by Celebrations.com
Reuse old cans of frosting, or any lightweight can or jar, and create a ribbon windsock with leftover craft supplies. These tutorial is very easy to follow and kids will love to hang their creation in the backyard. All this activity requires is ribbon or paper, a can or jar, scissors, and double stick tape or glue.?Summer Windsock Craft for Kids by Celebrations.com
For a little indoor time, we love this non-toxic activity. Using kitchen ingredients and craft supplies, you can create a full color spectrum of fun glitter play dough balls for an awesome rainy day activity. Experiment with different levels of?food colorings for different color effects. Rainbow Glitter Play-Doh by Celebrations.com
The last activity is for the advanced crafter. What kid wouldn't get a kick out of playing outside in their very own teepee? This awesome craft is great to set up before play dates and sleepovers. Once constructed, kids will spend hours outside playing in the yard. How to Make a Teepee by Celebrations.com

PFT: Bengals' Gruden expects club to break out
APOne of the reasons Alex Smith held onto the quarterback job with the 49ers as long as he did was by being careful with the ball.
But while 10 interceptions over his final 25 starts is about as clean as it gets, he had just 30 touchdown passes over that same span, and Chiefs coach Andy Reid wants to make sure Smith?s not too quick to give up on potential big plays, especially in practice.
?You want to get a feel for the offense now, particularly when you?re new at it [and] if there are close throws, challenge it, see what you can get away with,? Reid said, via Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star. ?If it ends up being an interception, OK, it?s an interception. You learn from it. These are smart guys so they learn from it and once they get into the season, they?re not experimenting with it on game day and they know what they can get away with and know what they can?t.
?It?s a new offense. I would tell any quarterback that comes in new that that?s what you need to do. I?ve told them all that. Go ahead and take your shots and see what you can get away with, within reason. But if it?s a close throw, there are going to be a few of those in the National Football League on game day so you need to know what you can get away with on each route.?
There have been some deep balls thrown in recent Chiefs OTAs, and while Smith?s not going to turn into Daryle Lamonica in one offseason, he?s willing to see where this goes.
?You want to stay aggressive,? Smith said. ?But in the end I?m always trying to make the right read and throw where the defense is telling me to throw. You don?t come out here and predetermine anything, like ?Oh, I?m going to chuck it deep on this play.? I?m constantly trying to just trust my eyes and what I?m seeing out there, trust my reads and what I?ve prepared for and then come out here and throw good balls.?
Reid?s smart enough to know what he has to work with here. He just has to be careful he doesn?t push too hard to turn Smith into something he?s not.
Chiefs quarterbacks turned the ball over 27 times last year, so merely competent play will make a huge difference. And they have sufficient help on offense that Smith?s smart, spread-it-around style can help them win more games just by being efficient.
But if he starts doing things he?s not comfortable with or able to do, they run the risk of not being that much better.

Why You Should Make Checklists before Installing Carpet Flooring ...
Installing carpet on your home, office or any property that you have can be an advantage. Carpet provides the room where it is installed with warm and comfortable ambiance. Carpet also reduces and muffles noises and make the room significantly more silent. Carpet flooring can be installed in almost every part of your home or workplace. You can install it at your bedroom to improve its warmth and comfort level or at your office to keep it free from noises, which can potentially become disturbance for you when carrying out your works. You can even install carpet flooring at your bathroom. Waterproof carpet is available for purchase if you want to install carpet flooring at your bathroom.
If you want to install carpet flooring at any part of your home or workplace, there are some important things that you should take into consideration. Therefore, before commencing the installation, you should make a checklist to make sure that all stages of the installation are taken care of perfectly and cost-effectively. In your checklist, you should include important actions that you have to do before the installation of the carpet flooring, those necessary during the installation and those after you have installed the flooring. Be circumspect and meticulous when building your checklists and make sure that you always make sure that the entire installation process is in compliance with those checklists.
You can start by building a list of actions that you have to do before you start the installation process. When you want to install carpet flooring at your home or workplace, you are always free to decide whether to do the installation job by yourself or to hire a professional flooring installer to install it at your property. Everything about this decision should be put in the topmost position of your list because the rest of the installation process will mostly be based on this decision. If you decide to do the installation by yourself, the most important thing that you must do before installing the flooring is preparing the site where the installation takes place. Make sure that the site is enclosed, that all wet processes are finished, that the ventilation and air conditioning or heating system works perfectly, that water and electricity are available, and that the site is perfectly cleaned. If you prefer to rely on professional installer, the installer will take care of all of the preparatory necessities for you. If you live in St Paul, Minnesota, you can locate a reliable carpet flooring installer by searching for carpet installation in St Paul?by using internet.
After you prepare the site, you should prepare the carpet that you want to install on it. Measure the carpet, decide how many seams that you want to use, define the seam locations, and take care of such important aspects as carpet padding and the positioning and repositioning of furniture and appliances. After the carpet is installed, vacuum it to free it from debris and organisms that may be dangerous for your health.

Hagel tours new Navy combat vessel

SINGAPORE (AP) ? U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel toured the U.S. Navy's new small combat ship, the USS Freedom, the first of a new class of littoral warships recently deployed to Asia to partner with allies in the region.
His visit to the ship on Sunday comes amid nagging questions about the cost and viability of the roughly $34 billion program and whether the Pentagon's plan to buy as many as 52 of the vessels should be chopped by as much as half because of budget constraints.
Docked at Changi Naval Base, the Freedom has been participating in naval exercises with countries in the region, and going through regular maintenance and logistical checks as part of an effort to work through any problems in its maiden mission.
Hagel is the first Pentagon chief to step aboard a littoral combat ship that has deployed, and this was his first visit to any ship as secretary. Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates toured one of the vessels when it was in development at Naval Station Mayport in Florida.
On board the warship, Hagel met with crew members, starting on the deck, where a Black Hawk helicopter stood ready to go, and moving to the bridge and then the compact operations center, with its array of computer stations and displays. He also watched as sailors in a rigid hull inflatable boat demonstrated a launch and landing, easily sliding up into the docking area then returning out in to the Singapore Strait.
The USS Freedom, with its crew of about 90 sailors, arrived in Singapore on April 18, for the first ever overseas deployment of an LCS.
Swift and agile, the smaller ships are designed to operate in littoral waters, which are more shallow and close to shore. Dwarfed by the Navy's larger aircraft carriers and destroyers, the LCS ships give the U.S. the ability to work better with navies from Asian nations ? such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Thailand ? that use smaller vessels to patrol the seas or battle piracy. The U.S. Navy's larger ships are often too big to pull into some ports in the region.
With a maximum speed of more than 40 knots ? compared to the Navy's larger destroyers and cruisers which travel at about 30 knots ? the littoral combat ships are about the size of a Coast Guard cutter. The USS Freedom is a bit longer that a football field.
The ship development program, however, has been fraught with cost hikes, design and construction problems and worries that plans to make two versions of the ship are pricey and may not be necessary.
But Lt. Cmdr. Clay Doss told reporters traveling with Hagel that recent maintenance issues are part of the process any vessel goes through when programs are beginning. It's not unusual, he said, for a ship to experience growing pains that have to be worked out during its first deployment.
Doss said the Freedom is scheduled to leave Singapore in December and the second LCS will arrive in August 2014. In mid-2015 the navy expects to have two of the ships in Singapore and the region at the same time.
Hagel is in Singapore to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue security conference as part of a weeklong trip that will also take him to Brussels for a meeting of NATO defense ministers.
According to a Congressional Research Service report issued about a week ago on the program, the Navy plans to buy 52 ships. So far, the U.S. has bought 12, but plans to buy four this year have been complicated by the automatic budget cuts, known at the sequester. The proposed 2014 budget requests about $1.8 billion for four more.
CRS said there are "concerns over the ships' ability to withstand battle damage, and concerns over whether the ships are sufficiently armed and will be able to perform their stated missions effectively."
The report concluded, however, that the LCS is still the most economical way to meet the mission needs of the Navy. And it said that some of the design and construction issues have been resolved during the normal course of development.
The Navy is buying two versions of the ship, the Freedom and the Independence, and they are designed to be able to be able to switch out various packages of equipment in order to carry out particular missions, such as surface and anti-submarine warfare and mine countermeasures.
The Freedom version is being built by Lockheed Martin with Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., and the larger Independence version is being built by General Dynamics Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.

'Back to sleep' does not affect baby's ability to roll
June 3, 2013 ? Baby, keep on rolling. A campaign to put babies to bed on their backs to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome has not impaired infants' rolling abilities, according to University of Alberta research.
Johanna Darrah, a professor of physical therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, says infants develop the ability to roll much the same today as they did 20 years ago when the "back to sleep" campaign was introduced and successfully reduced the occurrence of SIDS. Her research answers fears that the back to sleep campaign, which recommends putting babies to bed on their back instead of their stomach, would hurt an infant's gross motor development, specifically the ability to roll from tummy to back and vice versa.
"Infant gross motor development hasn't changed that much in 20 years," says Darrah. "The thought that babies first roll from their tummy to their back, before they go from their back to their tummy, does not appear to be the case. For most babies, they happen very close together."
Darrah first studied infant motor development in the early 1990s as a graduate student of former dean Martha Cook Piper when the pair published the Alberta Infant Motor Scale, an observational assessment scale used throughout the world to measure infant motor skill development from birth to walking.
More than 20 years later, Darrah revisited the work, studying the rolling abilities and motor skills development of 725 Canadian infants ranging in age from one week to eight months. One of her goals was to see whether the norms identified and developed 20 years ago still represent the age of emergence of gross motor skills.
Darah notes there is some concern in the physical therapy community that babies develop movement skills like rolling from tummy to back at later ages because of reduced time spent on their stomachs. Those concerns appear to be unfounded, she says, explaining that her results are particularly valuable for health-care practitioners specializing in early childhood development.
"Our results would suggest that gross motor skills emerge in the same order and at the same ages as 20 years ago. The environment is of course important to gross motor development, but the change in a sleeping position hasn't made much difference as to when babies roll from stomach to back."
