NHL notes: Canucks coach: Some day Marchand is 'going to get it'

If you thought Sami Salo was angry Saturday, you should have seen his coach a day later.

Vancouver Canucks bench boss Alain Vigneault blistered Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien and player Brad Marchand, saying it?s only a matter of time until someone in the National Hockey League hurts Marchand, who concussed Salo with a dangerous low-bridge hit Saturday in Boston.

Julien suggested the injury ? Salo has a concussion after landing on the back of his head and neck ? was the Canuck?s fault for taking a run at Marchand.

?If guys start protecting themselves the way Marchand did, maybe guys will stop taking runs at other guys,? Julien told reporters, ?because that?s the consequences ? you end up paying for taking runs at other guys, too.?

"That?s a stupid comment," Vigneault said Sunday after the Canucks practised in Sunrise, Florida, ahead of Monday?s game against the Panthers. "What Marchand did, you could end a player?s career doing that. I?ve never seen Sami Salo take a run at any player in the NHL. All Sami Salo has done is play the game with integrity.

"Marchand ? and this is just my feeling ? but some day he?s going to get it. Some day, someone?s going to say ?enough is enough? and they?re going to hurt the kid because he plays to hurt players. And if the league doesn?t care, somebody else will."

The league may care. Marchand had a hearing scheduled with league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan after being assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for ducking into Salo?s knees.

The 37-year-old Finn did not return to the Canucks? 4-3 win, but accompanied the team to Florida.

Vigneault said Salo awoke Sunday with a headache and is being treated according to the league?s concussion protocol.

Iginla?s feat impresses Flames teammate

Brendan Morrison hasn?t been around the NHL quite as long as Jarome Iginla, but he?s been around long enough to fully appreciate what the Calgary Flames captain achieved Saturday night at the Saddledome.

Iginla scored his 500th career goal in a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild. The goal came in his 1,149th regular season appearance and 15th season with the team.

?You look at the guys who are on the list (500-goal scorers) and there?s not many from this era or generation,? said the 36-year-old Morrison, who?s marking his 13th season in the league. ?And goal scoring has kind of been down the past 10 or 15 years, so it?s a magnificent feat.?

What makes it even more remarkable for Morrison, who has 200 goals and 600 points, is the consistency of the captain. Split up, Iginla scored 253 goals at home, 247 on the road; 250 pre-lockout and 250 post-lockout.

?A couple of us guys were talking about it earlier and it?s almost like scoring a goal every second game,? he said. ?I know he?s played over 1,000 games but it?s pretty close to that clip.

?It?s a remarkable number, an amazing feat.?

Duco set to face former club

With depth forward Andrew Ebbett out indefinitely with a broken collarbone, the Vancouver Canucks recalled minor-league forward Mike Duco.

The feisty 24-year-old, who spent three years in the Florida organization and played two games for Panthers last season, will make his Canucks debut Monday against his former team. Duco had the first hat trick of his professional career in the Chicago Wolves? 5-2 win Friday in Peoria, Illinois.

"I?ve got a lot of good memories here; I played my first NHL game here," Duco said after arriving in the middle of Sunday?s practice in Sunrise. "I?m just really happy to be part of (the Canucks) and thankful to get an opportunity."

Ebbett was injured on a first-period hit by Bruins defenceman Dennis Seidenberg on Saturday. The impact displaced Ebbett?s collarbone, and he is probably finished for the season.
