The FitBark Pet Activity Monitor Is A Reasonable Device For Pet Owners

FitBarkI don?t want to awaken the ire of any committed pet owners but I would be lying if I said I didn?t cringe a little bit when I hear about extreme pet products and services like doggie treadmills, pet psychiatrists or pet fitness centers. Still, I came across FitBark on the floor at TechCrunch Disrupt and while it could, at first, seem ?extreme? I found that after hearing the creators' explanation, their device actually seems pretty reasonable.

Price not worried about discipline over ump spat

By DAVE SKRETTA

AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price is not concerned about potential discipline from Major League Baseball after his verbal spat with umpire Tom Hallion last weekend.

Price accused Hallion of directing a profanity toward him during the Rays' 8-3 win over the White Sox on Sunday. The AL Cy Young Award winner thought Hallion missed a pitch and exchanged words with the plate umpire while heading to the dugout after the seventh inning.

After the game, Hallion vehemently denied Price's claim.

"I'll come right out bluntly and say he's a liar," he told a pool reporter.

Price took to Twitter to dispute Hallion's version of events and said before Tuesday night's game in Kansas City that he was upset with himself and never looked up until he heard Hallion's voice.

"You can't talk to me that way, period," Price said. "That was my whole thing. It had nothing to do with the strike zone. You don't talk to people that way."

Price also took umbrage with being called a liar.

"I'm not a liar," he said pointedly. "I'm not a liar, period."

Two of Price's teammates, pitchers Matt Moore and Jeremy Hellickson, came to Price's defense from the dugout during the game. Hallion ejected Hellickson after he warned them to keep quiet.

Moore and Hellickson joined Price in addressing the issue on Twitter, with Hellickson saying, "There's only one person lying about all this and his name starts with a T and rhymes with pom."

Price and his teammates could be disciplined for violating MLB's social media policy, which forbids "content that questions the impartiality of or otherwise denigrates a Major League umpire."

Hallion also could be disciplined for initiating the incident.

Asked if it would be awkward the next time Hallion umpired one of his games, Price replied: "Not for me."

Earlier Tuesday, Price stopped by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, where he was presented with the Wilber "Bullet" Rogan Award as the American League's top pitcher.

A three-time All-Star, Price went 20-5 with a league-leading 2.56 ERA last season. He finished tied with the Los Angeles Angels' Jered Weaver for the most wins in the majors.

"It's heavy," Price said with a smile, hefting up the trophy while sitting in the visiting clubhouse at Kauffman Stadium. "I like it when they're heavy."

S&P 500 closes at record, led by energy, tech shares

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The S&P 500 index ended at an all-time high on Monday as growth-oriented stocks, including energy and technology, lead the way to the index's sixth rise in the past seven sessions.

Stronger-than-expected housing data also boosted the market, as did Italy's formation of a new government, ending months of uncertainty and raising hopes for new policies to promote growth in the euro zone's third-largest economy.

Pressure has grown on the European Central Bank to lower interest rates with the euro zone mired in recession. Money market traders are evenly split on whether the ECB will cut rates at its meeting on Thursday, according to a Reuters poll.

Wall Street followed European stocks higher as Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta urged a focus on growth policies and away from austerity measures in his inaugural speech.

"After the election there was a lot of uncertainty about whether Italy could form a government, so now there is not only a great deal of relief over that, but also expectations for additional monetary policies from the ECB," said Alec Young, global equity strategist at S&P Equity Research in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 106.20 points, or 0.72 percent, at 14,818.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 11.37 points, or 0.72 percent, at 1,593.61. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 27.76 points, or 0.85 percent, at 3,307.02.

The U.S. Federal Reserve will also meet this week for a two-day session beginning on Tuesday. The Fed is expected to maintain its stimulus policy. Data on Monday showing muted inflation gave the Fed room for accommodative measures.

Also lifting markets was Apple Inc , which jumped 3.1 percent to $430.12 after taking initial steps for what would be its first debt sale. Technology stocks <.splrct> rose 1.7 percent, making the sector the best-performing on Monday.

Among energy shares, Chevron Corp rose 1.1 percent to $121.32.

A report showed contracts to buy previously owned homes rose last month to their highest level since April 2010, showing underlying strength in the housing market recovery, even though the pace of sales growth has cooled in recent months.

The S&P 500 closed just barely above its previous record hit earlier this month of 1,593.37.

"The market's trend continues to be higher, but it is still attractive at these valuations," said Young, who has a 12-month target of 1,670 for the S&P.

About 71 percent of New York Stock Exchange-listed companies closed higher while 65 percent of companies traded on the Nasdaq ended in positive territory.

Volume was light, with about 5.10 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, below the daily average so far this year of about 6.36 billion shares.

Moody's Corp was the S&P 500's top percentage gainer, jumping 8.3 percent to $59.69 after the company settled a lawsuit alleging that it had misled investors about the safety of risky debt vehicles it had rated.

McGraw-Hill Cos , whose Standard & Poor's unit said it settled similar suits, rose 2.8 percent to $53.45.

Roper Industries Inc fell 3.8 percent to $118.68 after reporting first-quarter revenue that missed expectations, though it raised its full-year profit outlook.

Of the 274 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings to date for current season, 69 percent have beat analysts' expectations and 43.2 percent have reported revenue above expectations.

The second half of the earnings season may not be as strong as the first one, data showed.

Pirate Party has electoral breakthrough in Iceland

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) ? Iceland, a nation of seafarers, has been stormed by pirates.

They won't be forming the government, but online freedom advocates the Pirate Party were still big winners in the country's election.

The party, just a few months old, took 5.1 percent of the vote in Saturday's poll, gaining three of the 63 seats in Iceland's parliament, the Althingi.

It is the biggest electoral trophy yet for a movement founded seven years ago in Sweden by a group of rebellious file-sharing geeks and hackers who scoffed at copyright laws.

Now, its Icelandic leader says, the party is "the political arm of the information revolution," dedicated to freedom of expression and political transparency, online and off.

Birgitta Jonsdottir, the most senior of Iceland's three victorious Pirate lawmakers, argues that political and legal structures around the world have not kept pace with the technological change that has transformed the way we live. She compares it to new software that can't run on an old computer.

"We feel that most people, not only in Iceland but all over the world, feel that the institutions that are set up no longer function for us," she said.

"We need to create a new mainframe, a new hardware for this stuff."

The Pirate Party was founded in Sweden in 2006, its name a taunt to the anti-piracy activities of copyright-holders, its logo a buccaneering black flag.

It has spread to countries including the United States, but has had its greatest electoral success in northern Europe.

Sweden has elected two Pirate members to the European Parliament, and last year a Pirate candidate was elected to the Czech Republic's upper house, the Senate. There are several dozen Pirate deputies at state level in Germany, and the party could gain national seats there in September's election.

The Icelandic party was founded late last year, but the volcanic North Atlantic nation ? population 320,000 ? has a long history as a bastion of technological and political experimentation. Physically isolated near the Arctic Circle, it is one of the world's most wired countries and has been a hub for the online secret-spilling group WikiLeaks. Jonsdottir has worked with WikiLeaks in the past.

In 2011 the country announced it would crowd-source a new constitution, allowing Icelanders through Facebook and other online platforms to submit ideas directly to, and debate with, an elected committee set up to draft the new document.

For some Icelanders, the Pirates made an appealing party of protest. Five years after its debt-swollen banks collapsed during the global credit crisis, the country still faces high inflation, capital controls and a deflated currency, while many Icelanders are still struggling to pay off mortgage debts made bigger by the crisis.

The main contenders in Saturday's election were the center-right parties that led Iceland into the crash and the left-wing coalition that has been implementing painful austerity measures ever since.

"The Pirates have a cool factor," said travel agent Hilmar Einarsson. "They are not typical politicians, but represent ordinary Icelanders. We want our country back, and they understand that more than any other party here in Iceland."

Others found the party's success mystifying.

"It was primarily a shock because their extreme view is considered by most (as) only appealing to punks still stuck in the '80s," said entertainment consultant Daddi Gudbergsson.

The Pirate Party is a small force in Iceland's parliament, but it has big plans. In a system such as Iceland's, where coalitions and cross-party deal-making are common, minor parties can punch above their weight.

Pirate policies include a direct-democracy project that will put ideas suggested by citizens before parliament, and a package of laws related to publishing and libel that are intended to make Iceland a global beacon of media freedom.

The Pirates also will press for the passing of Iceland's crowd-sourced constitution, which is languishing at the draft stage.

Elected to the Althingi in 2009 as part of the Citizens' Movement, Jonsdottir is the only one of the party's three legislators with experience in parliament.

She says her party of rebels is not afraid to get its hands dirty in mainstream politics.

Iceland's new government has yet to be formed following an election that saw two center-right parties take the bulk of seats. As the political brokering begins, Jonsdottir says the Pirates are prepared to support a coalition that does not involve the conservative Independence Party ? which won the largest share of votes ? but will not seek Cabinet positions.

Alexander Hensel, a political scientist who studies the Pirates at the Goettingen Institute for Democracy Research in Germany, said broadening its platform from the initial focus on Internet freedom was both an opportunity and a risk for the Pirate movement.

"One problem of the Pirate Party is that in past times they had a relatively clear, one-issue profile, as the Net party," he said. "The party has now a much wider profile, but it is much harder to articulate."
